Wind Velocity Monitor
ACD?s wind velocity monitor continuously monitors the wind speed and provides two limit switches with one changeover relay contact per setting.

ACD?s wind velocity monitor/switch was prompted by some serious crane accidents during the erection of tall constructions, where wind condition appears to have been a major contributing factor. Many fatalities can be voided with proper wind condition monitoring.

Mobile crane accidents can cause massive production delays, devastating property damage, and loss of life. Influences of wind forces during crane operation is one of the major factors.

The operation of a crane without the knowledge of expected wind forces and the actual sail area of the load can lead to failure of components and/or toppling over of the crane; in cases of negligence there is a risk to life. In addition, operating cranes in windy conditions makes it more difficult to handle the load. The crane operator must be given sufficient warning to decide when the crane should be put out of service because of the risks due to high winds and his inability to control the load.

The instrument offered by ACD Machine Control Company, apart from continuously monitoring the wind speed, also provides two limit switches - ?ALARM? and ?DANGER? (settable over full range) - with one changeover relay contact per setting. Wind velocity sensor comprises three conical beaded edged cups of 132 mm in diameter, attached by arms to a central boss which drive a vertical spindle at a rotary speed proportional to the wind velocity (dimensions confirming to IS 5912: 1970). Aluminium and stainless steel are used throughout this assembly to ensure freedom from corrosion and long working life. A conical shield protects the spindle and bearing from rain.

An infrared transducer connected to the vertical shaft gives pulses proportional to the number of rotations of the vertical shaft. This signal is carried through interconnecting cable (standard length 20 m) to the display unit. The signal is further integrated with time to read wind speed in km/hr on a graphical display. The panel has provision to set the ALARM and DANGER limits.
