We offer maintenance-free product options to OEMs
CCTY Bearing is an engineering-led manufacturer that produces deep-grove ball bearings, ball joints, tie rods, bushings, SPBs, inner/outer rings and assemblies for off-highway/heavy-truck OEMs. Mitul Dave, Managing Director, CCTY India, discusses motion control and why the company selected India as the newest location for its global footprint.

Why did CCTY Bearing open an Indian office?
In response to the 'Make in India' campaign, Indian market is becoming the manufacturing hub for major global original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). As a Tier-I supplier to the construction and agricultural market, it was only logical for CCTY Bearing to secure an in-country presence to be closer to customers to respond to their growing demand for our products.

How will this office support the Indian market?
What sets CCTY apart from other bearing manufacturers is our ability to produce unique solutions. To do so, we partner with our customer's engineering teams. Since being fully accessible is important, our office in Gujarat is strategically located to allow us to meet with customers throughout the region. Our engineering team includes bearing experts along with manufacturing design professionals, so we can quickly adapt a bearing design to fit an application. It is usually easier for a mechanical engineer to alter a bearing rather than the overall design of a product and that's where we are able to assist.

In addition to customised solutions, we have a full range of standard bearings along with other motion control products that include tie rods, linkages, rod ends, ball joints and mast guide bearings. Our engineers are always looking for the most cost-effective solution for customers, without sacrificing quality or performance. This can mean a mix of both standard and unique bearing designs.

What would engineers be surprised to know about CCTY Bearing?
Two major factors come to my mind. First, we have a 70,000 sq m plant that houses all critical components: including heat treatment, sintering, turning, grinding, PTFE weaving and surface treatments. This level of control allows us to maintain the highest quality. Interested engineering customers are welcome to tour the plant to see the plant's capabilities and processes.

Second, we make bearing assemblies and ship them as a single unit: which means, we can manufacture the bearing and housing, giving customers a streamlined supplier base and lower cost. Some of the most common assemblies we see in the heavy-truck industry include ball joints threaded or welded to tie rods and rod end steering linkages.

Where are CCTY Bearing's products found in construction machinery?
Construction machinery depends on mobility and movement, two factors that require bearings. Two products from our line, bushings and spherical plain bearings (SPBs), are found throughout heavy-duty equipment. For example, in a dozer, bushings are located in lift and tilt cylinders, undercarriage, blade and suspension system.

By offering both maintenance-free and products that require greasing, we have options for OEMs designing trucks, lifts and excavators for harsh working environments.

What should engineers consider when choosing a bearing?
Many factors go into selecting the right bearing. Application, load, speed, precision, temperature and space are just a few of the important data points when determining the best product. We have a free bearing design check list to guide the bearing selection process. It can be downloaded at: https://hubs.ly/H08rPpT0

What is new in bearing design?
For companies that deeply invest in research like CCTY Bearing, there is always something in development. For example, we are working on a high-load bushing with PTFE fabric that can withstand 250 Mpa dynamic load/500 Mpa static load. It will have 8-10 times the service life of a metal polymer bushing.

We have also just received a patent for the Square Ball Universal JointTM. This redesign of the century-old universal joint has just eight parts as opposed to a traditional u-joint which has 100 plus components. The square ball design is ideal for steering applications.

Could you elaborate on the industry sectors you service?
Our products are found in critical applications in construction, mining, agriculture, off-road utility vehicles and material handling.

One of the advantages of a customer base across these rugged industries is the similarities in bearing requirements. For example, CCTY has developed a greaseless ball joint for tractors, making the product maintenance-free while being able to handle heavier loads. Construction OEMs can benefit from the same design attributes that have been verified by others.
