On growth track
The industrial cranes market is on an upward trend with new manufacturing units and construction activities picking up.

Industrial cranes are mainly used in the manufacturing sector to handle loads. The major manufacturing sectors include, steel, paper, automobile, and all engineering product manufacturing. The commonly used industry cranes in such manufacturing segments include EOT cranes and hoists. There are also big gantry cranes of huge lifting capacity that come under the industrial cranes category. Industrial cranes consist of a whole gamut of lift and reach equipment, used in all industry sectors. This include jib, pillar, wall-mounted, overhead travelling, tyre-mounted gantry, rail mounted gantry, and special purpose cranes.

Market scenario
There are many small and medium players across the country who manufacture small industrial cranes that are used in workshops and fabrication units. However, recently the market has picked up momentum with the organised players such as ElectroMech coming out with new products and solutions.

According to Tushar Mehendale, Managing Director, ElectroMech Material Handling Systems (India), India is experiencing a good traction in capital investments. 'Excess capacity, that was the bane of the manufacturing industry in India over the past five years, has almost been completely utilised. As a result several companies are focussing on increasing their capacities. Newer capacity additions - be it through greenfield projects or brownfield projects - need material handling equipment,' he observes.

Demand trend
Manufacturing industry in general is driving all-round demand in the market, according to Mehendale. 'In addition, the commodities industry is on an upswing. As a result, we are seeing a lot of growth in ferrous and non-ferrous industry, both upstream as well as downstream,' he adds.

The market for wire rope hoists held the largest market share in 2016. Wire rope medium changes according to the load capacity of the hoists, and these hoists are powered electrically or pneumatically, and are mounted overhead on the bridge beam with the help of a trolley. Wire ropes are widely used in the production environment because they offer fast lifting time. They are normally used to lift objects weighing below 10 tons.

According to market research reports, in the hoists market, Asia Pacific held the largest market share in 2016. The feature such as reduction of labour expense, high safety, time saving and lower maintenance costs are the few aspects which expected to drive the electric overhead travelling (EOT) cranes market across the world. The other factors which are driving the EOT cranes market such as increasing construction activities in emerging in India and China is anticipated to rise the demand for EOT cranes in the coming years.

In India the market dynamics is unstable as in the past, the cycle of growth and de-growth follow each other. ' In such scenarios, growth is going to come in short spurts followed by short spurts of depression. One needs to be prepared to handle such variances in the market conditions,' Mehendale sums up with a caution.

INDUSTRIAL CRANES: APPLICATIONS

Workshops

Manufacturing

Industrial maintenance

Heavy engineering and fabrications

Power plants

Petroleum sector

Infrastructure construction ancillaries

Marine and shipyards

Metal extraction
